Carltola was  regular in Samba parties in Manguera and had only 4 years of formal education, a despite of that he has composed the most beautiful and well elaborated samba music of Brazil.

Cartola was a founder member of Escola de Samba Mangueira in 1928 and choose the colors green and rose as symbol for the Samba School ( Brazilian famous Samba Shcool Agremiation)

In 1964 Cartola married Euzebia Silva do Nascimento ( D. Zica) . With his talent recognized on the 70’s Cartola released his first LP record and in 1974 he had his first national show seasons an absolute success, a still passion for all Brazilians .

Before his death, Carlos Drummond de Andrade ( The Poet) wrote an article called: “The Noble, The Simple, I will not say the Divine, but the human Cartola, who had fall in love for the samba and made the samba a massager of his delicate soul”.

abysm you have excavated with your feet  Cartola was an alive proof of the God wisdom, born black, poor, had no religion, no formal education, lived his entire life over the slums (favelas)  and has composed the most beautiful samba verses ever wrote and  left a incredible legacy for the Brazilian people.

Cartola was born in Rio de Janeiro, in a borough called Catete, but spent his childhood in the neighborhood of Laranjeiras. Due to financial difficulties, the large family moved to Mangueira hill, where a small favela was beginning to appear.

The Life is a Wind  Mill  (Free Translation)

(Cartola)
It’s really early my love
You just started to know the life
Announcing the time of the departure
Without know nor ever where to go
Just pay attention my dear Although
I know you made your decision In each corner falls a little of your life
Soon you will not be the same
I knew Listen to me carefully my love
The life is a wind mill
Will make in pieces your entire dream
Will make dust all your illusions
Please pay attention my love
In each love your will retain only the cynic side
And when you wake up you at the edge of the abyss
Abyss you excavated with you feet.

Original in Portuguese:

O Mundo é um moinho
(Cartola)

Ainda é cedo amor
Mal começastes a conhecer a vida
Já anuncias a hora de partida
Sem saber mesmo o rumo que irás tomar
Presta atenção querida
Embora eu saiba que estás rsolvida
Em cada esquina cai um pouco a tua vida
E em pouco tempo não serás mais o que és
Ouça me bem amor
Preste atenção o mundo é um moinho
Vai triturar teus sonhos tão mesquinhos
Vai reduzir as ilusões a pó
Preste atenção querida
De cada amor tu herdarás só o cinismo
Quando notares estás à beira do abismo
Abismo que cavastes com os teus pés.

I need to walk (Cartola) - Free Translation from Portuguese

Let me go, I need to walk, let me do, I need to find, laugh although cry
I wanna see the sunrise, see the water of rivers running, and listen the birds signing
I wanna born, I wanna life
Let me go, I need to walk, let me do, I need to find, laugh although cry
And, if someone asks about me, just tell I am getting back ,as soon as I found myself
I wanna see the sunrise, see the water of rivers running, and listen the birds signing
Let me go, I need to walk, let me do, I need to find, laugh although cry
