The National Mall in Washington, D.C. played host to the National Book Festival yesterday. Aimed at children, the event was full of author readings and signings, as well as appearences by big fuzzy versions of kid-lit favorites like Curious George, Clifford, and WordGirl. Also, literary icons such as Salman Rushdie mande an appearance (I guess Haroun and the Sea of Stories was a children's book).

The Library of Congress took the opportunity to unveila  preview of the World Digital Library, a multilingual document database scheduled for launch next year.

The 2008 National Book Festival marked the last year the event was hosted by First Lady Laura Bush. She and her daughter Jenna Bush also presented as co-authors of the children's book "Read All About It!" "The National Book Festival is a joyous celebration of reading and an inspiration for new generations of creativity," said Dr. James H. Billington, the Librarian of Congress. "We are grateful to Mrs. Bush for making this a signature event in the nation's capital for the last eight years. Her love of reading has inspired millions to enjoy the Library of Congress in Washington and online and to use their own hometown libraries everywhere."

Had a great time listening to Geraldine Brooks and watching all the people at the Nat. Book Festival. Waiting in line to get her autograph in my book was fun too even if it took over an hour and it rained...  but we managed to get away with dry books and autographs.

jordan, I like this story. It's good stuff.

I am glad that books are still in demand and I for one can not get used to digital books to hard on the eyes and the heat of the computer reading in bed or on the sofa is not my thing.

Books still got my preference.

jordan, I like this story. I'll have to mark this down for next year.  I find that many books written for children are my favorites.
