The rise of the silent disco

The 'Silent Disco' concept is one where participants wear headphones to hear the music that they are dancing to. There are essentially two types of silent disco the first being a clubbing experience where all participants are provided with Wi-Fi headphones and DJs spin and mix much as in a normal club except that the music is only heard by clubbers wearing the headphones. The other type is the flash mob silent disco where participants agree to meet up at a public place with their own headphones and music and all dance at the same time but to their own individual selection of music.
The Glastonbury Festival held its first silent disco in 2005 and since then many festivals have a silent disco venue on site.
Environmentalist groups can hold demonstrations in wild places and now party without the worry of disturbing the peace of local wildlife and the pull of a party can help bring participants in.
But you don't have to be a hardened clubber, flash mobber or eco-warrior to enjoy the silent disco as this story shows where call centre staff held their own silent disco to raise awareness of breast cancer.
CALL centre workers got in the pink to attend a silent disco in aid of a cancer charity.
Four hundred Blackhorse employees, dressed in pink, swapped their headsets for headphones and danced at their desks on the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Breast Cancer Care Cymru is encouraging everyone in Wales to hold an In the Pink fundraiser to help their work.
Lisa Gilmour, area fundraiser, said: “The great thing about In the Pink is you can do anything, as the Blackhorse call centre proved.
“Whether you’re at work, home or school, you can easily get In the Pink spirit and have a fantastic event and raise money for Breast Cancer Care Cymru.

It's really strange to watch as an outsider.

I can imagine - and its probaly not really silent - if a few hundred people are listening in a close space to loud music on gtheir headphones then there must be leakage.... at least some...

I think someone should call Dr. Who, they are going to be turned into "CYBERMEN" soon.
Silent "raves" have been around for awhile. I heard they started so that they could party all night and not get busted for loud music.

I was one of the DJs at the Koss Silent Disco at the LA Weekly Detour Festival.
I gotta say, in 25 years of club DJing, this was bizarre to say the least! When I first
arrived, I was like 'How the hell is anyone gonna KNOW this is happening'?
So I got the mic, for a call to arms:
'Anyone wearing Koss Headphones, put your hands up'
And I looked down the street, and saw a bunch of arms raised in the air! Then, about
200 kids descended towards the stage where I was about to start spinning.
I figured dropping The Ting Ting's "Great DJ" was a good way to kick things off
(and hopefully how the kids would feel once I got rollin'). And sure enough, there
were throngs of people all dancing in front of me, and really enjoying the whole thing!
So, suffice to say - THIS ENDED UP BEING A TOTAL BLAST!!!
My quote about the entire experience was:
"Surreal - In a Marlee Matlin on "Dancing With The Stars" kind of way..."

I caught the Dim Mak end of the silent disco at Detour because I was at the Mars Volta stage and missed Paul V's set.
I initially inteded to head over to the Bloody Beatroots stage and meet up with my EDC-minded friends, but the sight of people dancing to nothing, or so it seemed, intrigued me very much so. After waiting in line for what seemed eternity, I found myself dancing silly with strangers on the middle of the street with The Ting Tings shutting up and YELLE blaming the garcone.
As for the sound leak, there were none whatsoever; unless people singing out loud to "Build Me Up Butter Cup" counts. Yes the Dim Mak DJ played a ton of oldies and was I sad to have missed Paul V's dirty-electro a la 1031? YES! But being able to do a conga train with a bunch of eager-dancing strangers in the middle of the street was priceless.
It was cute. It was hilarious. It was amazing.
