Lyricist Tim Rice is set to return to theatre with with his first new musical in nearly 10 years - a musical based on the life of infamous Italian philosopher and writer, Niccolo Machiavelli.
A central figure of the Italian political renaissance, Machiavelli is best known for his writings on political theory. His best known work, The Prince, explains how to maintain political power and states that actions to protect a state or country, however cruel, are always justified.
Considering his success with Evita, there is no doubt Rice is capable of presenting the world of politics in a captivating manner. This impressive ability to sculpt the intricacies of leadership into entertainment will be thoroughly showcased in Rice's script and lyrics for the new production.
However, theatregoers shouldn't hold their breath, as this show won't be hitting the West End or Broadway anytime soon - this is still a work-in-progress.
The lyricist, famous for collaborating with Andrew Lloyd Webber on shows such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Evita, said he had finished a script for the production, but had not yet lined up a composer to put music to his words.
However, Rice ruled out Lloyd Webber, saying he was too busy with other projects.
“I have just written a script for a new show based on the life of Machiavelli, which I hope will work. I have not decided who will do the music yet, but it won’t be Andrew,” he joked. “He is doing Phantom Two and Phantom Three and Phantom Four...”
