Duel Carriageway may Ruin Battlefield

UPDATE 23rd February 2007 ''There certainly is a need, rather a necessity to build a duel carriageway ring road around Northampton town center. At the moment you have only one road to travel from one side to another. Even this one road is a problem, look at the number of speed cameras to show you that.
Historical sites can be incorporated into road design, and with a little imagination, you could also create a tourist attraction and a ring road duel carriageway into the bargain'' liam@liams.biz.
CAMPAIGNERS fear a Northampton battlefield could be ruined by plans to build a new road through the middle of it.In 2005, plans to build a road around the back of Delapre Abbey in Far Cotton were considered by Northamptonshire County Council.
After a massive public backlash, the scheme was withdrawn, but the latest county-wide road-building plans published by the authority show it could be on the cards again.
The news has been met with disappointment by county council member, Councillor Michael Hill (Con, Nene Valley) who has helped to lead the preservation of both the 12th century abbey and its surrounding parkland.
He said: "I was surprised to see the plans to build the link road had emerged again because it was my understanding they had finally been dropped.
"But I certainly think having a main road running right through a battlefield site would be a bad move."
