Killer Earthquake in Kyrgyzstan: Jolts Felt in Pakistan and China Too

A deadly earthquake has struck Kyrgyzstan killing at least 65 people. According to BBC News, the 6.6-magnitude quake struck at 2152 local time (1552 GMT) on Sunday, destroying more than 100 buildings in the southern province of Osh. a remote village called Nura is totally destroyed. The tremors have been felt throughout Central Asia as well as in the capital of Pakistan.

On October 8, 2005, a major earthquake, of 7.6 intensity on the Richter scale, had jolted the northern parts of Pakistan. Close to its third anniversary, the tremors on Sunday in the twin-cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad and other adjoining areas obviously created panic as people were reminded of that deadly earthquake in which almost 80,000 people lost their lives and millions were injured or displaced. Severe upthrust and poor construction on fault lines are attributed to the 2005 earthquake.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the intensity of the quake was 6.5 on the Richter scale and its epicentre was in the north of Peshawar, some 650km from Islamabad.

A seismic expert of the PMD said there was a possibility of aftershocks of the earthquake in many cities of the country.

The tremors reminded the citizens of the twin cities of the tragic scenes when one-and-a-half blocks of 10-storyed residential building - Margalla Towers - collapsed during the October 8, 2005 earthquake.

A total of 73 people were killed and over 85 injured in the catastrophe. The quake also hit many areas of the NWFP and Azad Kashmir killing about 73,000 people.

It may be mentioned here that the prime minister’s inspection commission had prepared an inquiry report into the alleged faulty construction of the building by its owner Ramzan Khokhar and Capital Development Authority (CDA).
