Wolf Attacks Dog in Park

Wolves are making a comeback on Vancouver Island. It is generally agreed that a healthy wolf population helps keep the deer and elk population healthy too. In fact, they have been so successful in recent years that they have spread out to many of the small, coastal islands as well. You would do well to keep Fido on a short leash in these areas.

A suspected wolf attack on a small dog resulted in the closure of a section of Pacific Rim National Park for about 12 hours earlier this week.

Wildlife officials say a local woman was walking her two dogs early Tuesday afternoon along a trail just south of the Ucluelet/Tofino junction. The dogs, a small poodle and a larger dog, were lagging some distance behind the woman when the attack occurred, said Bob Hansen of Parks Canada.

When the owner walked back on the trail to see what had happened, the larger dog was still on the trail and the poodle was missing.
