Recently questions have arisen regarding copyrighted images being published to stories on the sites. To clarify, our Code of Conduct states that NowPublic members will not:

"Plagiarize the work of others, fail to acknowledge source material, or use images that belong to others without their permission."

This means that members should only upload images to the site for which either:

a. the member owns the original copyright to the image(s)

b. the copyright owner has granted permission for the image(s) to be used on NowPublic

c. the image(s) have been made available for use via an appropriate Creative Commons license [learn more about CC licenses here]

d. the images have been released, by the copyright owner, for publicity purposes

If staff are unsure about the origin of an image uploaded to the site, they will message the member to determine the original copyright owner.

Images that are found to have been uploaded to the site without the original owner's permission will be removed from NowPublic.

If you discover images that appear to be in violation of the terms above, please message NowPublic Staff in order to have the images removed.

If you believe that any of your work has been copied or published or has otherwise been used in connection with NowPublic in a way that constitutes copyright infringement or is otherwise an infringement of your intellectual property rights, please see our Intellectual Property Policy.

Can we also have some guidance about the use of videos from Youtube via the search tool that NP provides and encourages the use of. I was informed that using ones from copied news sites might be a breach of copyright. And yet today a member of staff has used one that is copied from Fox News.

I am getting mixed messages on this issue!

AP one are one of the few that are probably OK to use as like Al Jazeera they have their own Youtube channel and allow embedding, since asking about the videos I have noticed many more pirated news videos being added by at least 4 different staff editors. I can only assume from the lack of any response on this matter here in the forum that it is only a concern if I use them and just another case of different rules for different users, to be on the safe side I have deleted every single video I have ever added to NP and won't be adding anymore.

All of the words are the same, so if these are the rules why aren't the Super Editors using them? Youtube will let you know if copyright is infringed on video's you make use or upload.  And another thing.....As far as staff like Super Editors cutting and pasting whole articles, If we can't do it than they can't do it!!!! Even if we do leave source.

See  I really didn't know that you weren't supposed to do that.

I think it would be easier and more efficient if you guys could slip in a button by images to report as a violation. I really think you'll get more feedback that way.

Site is looking snazzy by the way exciting changes.

Update: Suggestion - Allow a preview feature on images as well as stories. Love the new save and view features for stories btw.
