NP Rank:
MacBook Pro, Boot Camp ::running Vista Enterprise & IE 7
During the install I had just one NP page open, the IE Highlight install page. After downloading the file I ran the install. It errors out, because you have to close all IE windows...but the only one I had open was the NP one. So I closed IE and restarted the process -no issues, no errors (no customizing either).
Reboot.
Boot process, okay.
Windows startup, okay.
Login, scary!
It took a long time and things did not load properly. Windows started with a solid black background GUI, no icons, no task bar, just a mouse (responding) with a typical "waiting" mouse pointer. I *think* this is related to having a lot of widgets that probably use IE feeds. I have 6 RSS feed widgets, so if they use IE extensions I could see a hang up there, but I'm not sure.
After two-three minutes longer than usual everything looked to be in order. I never had an error pop up either.
Outside of that: I logged in via the highlight -not the website itself. That worked just fine. Posted a story, added tags, etc. All went well. I already deleted the test story.

I'm not 100% sure that the slowness you experienced has to do with Highlight. There is an issue in this version that may cause IE to load slowly if it was previously closed with Highlight open, but that would not be the case the first time you use it.

I try to install the Beta version of the IE Highlighter and I have a warning window pop up.
The window states that the installer is corrupted or incomplete and that this may be because of a damaged disk.
Of course, there is NO DISK because I downloaded the program to a file to install and launch.
Jordan, what is going on?
I will give it another try after we communicate.
Regards, Ed

It sounds like the file did not download correctly. Please try downloading it again.

When a message like this shows up it usually means the download did not complete which means you should give it more time

I downloaded for a secomd time - rebooted ... and no "highlight" button.
Any other suggestions?

Not having downloaded this software (I use Firefox for Mac) the only other suggestion I could offer is to switch to Firefox for Windows. It is a great browser and is free to download: http://en.www.mozilla.com/en/firefox/ Then you won't need the Highlight IE download. I switched from IE to Firefox years ago on my old Windows PC and have never regretted it. There is plenty of help available on the Firefox website, too.

I was asked to try the Beta for IE as a test - The Firefox version works fine, no problems.
Thanks for the try on assistance.

In IE7, the beta Highlight button does not appear in the main button bar (i.e. where one would think it should)... It appears to the very right, when one clicks that " tools >>" thingie (that's the technical term, by the way). If it still doesn't work, let me know. Thanks for your patience so far...

Okay, this one took me awhile...
I downloaded the Highlight
Beta tool, and then I closed IE7. When I double-clicked the Highlight
icon (on my desktop for easy access, but you can stick it anywhere), it
installed itself and prompted me to reboot, which I did. Then, when I
re-opened IE, I found taht the Highlight tool now lives behind that
little ">>" at the right-hand edge of the IE window.
Incidentally,
the error messages I recieved when I attempted to run the tool without
first closing IE7 were really unhelpful, and the tool itself didn't
show up when I did a system-wide search for "highlight". I began to
doubt my own sanity, and I totally share Edmund's frustration!
Incidentally, the new version of this tool will not require a reboot.

Thanks for sorting this out Jordan. Can you let the community know with a new thread once we have a resolution?

Funny you should ask! I proudly present my first round of testing notes:
HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE IE
(or, Can I Play with Madness?)
latest version does not require reboot, which is cool
IE7, XP:
no cursor in headline box
publish to NP: yes!
publish to blog (blogger): yes!
auto tags: yes!
reselecting text and clicking "add quote" in the highlight window allows you to "resample" the article. very nice.
Upon trying to publish a story whilst not logged in, the tool prompts me to sign in. upon doing so, I'm met with the message: "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience".
IE6, XP:
publish to NP: yes!
Publish to blog (blogger): yes!
when publishing whilst logged out, I am prompted to log in. Once logged in, I see that my headline, channel and added text have vanished.
Whilst logged in, when I attempt to insert a link, my headline, channel and added text in the body of the highlighted story vanishes.

I have installed both the IE and FireFox highlight tools, and have had only minor issues. The biggest problem was that if I chose to run the IE toolbar install I would have to save the download to my PC instead of being able to run it from the current location as it requires all IE windows to be closed at the time of opening the file. Closing IE "after" clicking on the download link does not work and I would then have to navigate back to the download page and actually save the install file first. Firefox worked like a charm. I feel this is a package error, as even though many anti-MS people would disagree, I rarely have problems installing toolbars within IE.
The only other issue with the highlight tool is the amount of un related tags it suggests. I may be using it wrong, but I don't feel words such as "that, the, who" and the like should be suggested as tags. I find myself having to remove large numbers of tags and adding the more important ones that are not picked up.
Other than that, I think NP has done a great job with the tool, and it should only continue to get better. Thanks
