NP Rank:
We're introducing a comprehensive member ranking system on NowPublic. Essentially it's a way to identify the most active and effective newshounds on the site.
Your stats - number of stories, comments, “good stuffs” etc.- will be counted and compared with other members to create an extensive leaderboard. Each action on the site will be weighted differently in determining scores (hint: the most influential stats are stories, comments, good stuffs, and front page stories).
Details will be tweaked as we go along, and we'll be looking for feedback to improve it. Let us know your thoughts in the forum once you've checked it out.
Good luck, and may the best NowPublicans win - or at least rank fairly high.

How about a prize for number one each week? A Tee Shirt? Bumper sticker? $$$?
at 20:37 on May 15th, 2008
Hmmm...within Editors, I'm #1 for the category of 365 days. What did I win?
A cap, plus chocolate, would do nicely. ;}
at 06:30 on May 16th, 2008
PEP,
You should get a cap and one of those chocolates that have an NP logo "eye imprint" and is a couple of pounds, Heck they should thow in a trip to the NP offices in BC
at 10:30 on May 16th, 2008
OOOOOH, I like your thinking. Chocolate, LOTS of chocolate. Me wuvs chocolate.
at 10:35 on May 16th, 2008
Hey! You're ahead of me in last 7 days and last 30 days!
Obviously, we ned to form a joint bloc. Any freebies that are chocolate-related, you share with me. Any clothing freebies (beyond the first cap or tee-shirt, OK, I can be grabby..heh heh) I share with you.
Now, there's an idea! ;}

No problem, the chocolate is yours. The NP boxers are mine. I cant compete with you on the 365 days.. I have been her almost 5 months
at 15:28 on May 16th, 2008
Boxers? OK, boxers for you, girl jammies for me. Do you think they're making a list of our wants? heh heh

They should be...

First, let me say thank you to the development and "geek" staff that all worked so hard on this. I know you cared very much to put in this kind of work.
That being said, let me again say that I'm not a big fan of a leaderboard. And I truly think that it would be more transparent, and put things more in context, to properly identify staff members as such. Simply lumping them in with other "members" or "editors" isn't transparent at all, as they have the geometrically amplified value of their Good Stuff flags, which count so much more than anyone else's, as well as their power tools to re-adjust the date and re-publish for anyone they choose to in order to gain them more attention, as well as the meetings to agree on which things to flag. Plus they are paid to be here and to post; as one contributor once said, the staff editors are really paid posters. Other people here, other than one active contributor that I know of who's been paid for posts, are volunteers who are dropping in during their free time. There's no way there's any competition in the two states: employees paid for time here; visitors volunteering their participation.
All that is just how the site operates; and what is, is. However, I think that not differentiating between staff members/staff editors and others is lacking in transparency. Why bother to differentiate between Editors, Wranglers, and members and then not follow through with the complete grouping of Staff Editors?
That would be just as easy to do as grouping any other members into a comparative block. So why not? Simple to do: Staff Editors, Guest Editors.

We have removed the NowPublic empoyees from the ranking lists. They do get scores, but will not appear in the lists.
at 10:26 on May 16th, 2008
That is very fair of you, and very kind to do that. Thank you. I worry about the members just beginning who see all those totals, realize that most of those ahead of them are employees, and feel like they can't compete.
This was such a good thing for you to do! :)

I agree with polisite. I'll be proud to wear shirt/hat that written "Now Public Member" he he
at 11:02 on May 16th, 2008
uusjio, congratulations on your #2 ranking! :)

Jordan - Even though PEP has made some interesting points, I like the idea! Thanks to everyone who worked on the development of "Ranking"!
at 07:12 on May 16th, 2008
Pep, all this talk of Chocolate intrigues me M-M-M Yum...... and Seed what of this talk of Chicken? Is it Fried?
Do I get some? So many questions, so little time!~
Seriously though, what does the number 23,000 beside my name mean?
All in all I like the leader board regardless of the standings, news is news, readership drives the news, and your news story, regardless of flags, comments, or cut and paste reporting. My preference is variety of topics to comment on, and research a story, as I never take a story on face value, preferring to see all sides of the coin, before commenting on it, sometimes with hilarious results, especially with my Photoshop.

Errrr, this was meant for Barry. Not sure how it wound up in politisite's discussion box. You hijacking stuff again, politisite? ;}
BARRY...And congratulations on the #1 by your name.
What all this talk means is that everyone who gets chocolate as a reward for their placings sends it to PEP. ;}
Hey, a girl's gotta work what she's working!
comment edited by PEP, working without chocolate, poor thing.
at 13:50 on May 16th, 2008
Sorry
at 15:33 on May 16th, 2008
I think maybe the placer thingy--vs. the mathifier--may be putting things in odd places.
Tell us, just what are you sorry FOR, politisite! tell all. whisper.
Barry, the last time we discussed food you were, I believe, in your tatty bathrobe cooling off in front of the refrigerator. Or something like that. At least, that was your story.
at 18:15 on May 16th, 2008
Hey the fridge is never far from me.
at 09:24 on May 17th, 2008
I was saying sorry for being in the wrong thread. Nothing Jucy.
at 14:27 on May 16th, 2008
All this talk of Food and Chocolate Chicken is making me hungry,
at 16:10 on May 16th, 2008
Hey, where's this chicken feed story?
at 00:08 on May 17th, 2008
Rene, that I don't know, but I can direct you to a thread that's now "processed" chicken feed......yea, here. Someone remind me in the morning that I've gotta figure out how they want the flaming reports to go in and having the staff help with closing down that thread. (yawn, excuse me) Believe me, the chicken feed has been.....well.....and.....deeply....processed......and....launched....from...the ...chicken...feed.....processing....system.
Speaking of barnyard stuff, one of my cyber buddies went through trauma recently. Her satellite service dropped the channel that provided championship rodeo coverage--the day before the national finals of the bullriding championship. Now, that was *serious* suffering. I kinda think she would have been justified in shooting their equipment after switching to their competitor. But as far as I know, she didn't do an Elvis. Certainly grounds there, though. Dang! The day before.
;) And we think that we have problems. heh heh
Maybe for our Leaderboard, in a close competition, we could have a cow chip throwing contest. Get out doors, have some healthy athletic competition. heh heh heh heh (warning: mischief program engaged......)
If you check out the Editor stats, you'll see that politiste and I keep swapping who's on top and who's ..not..on...top. Barry, though, with his fridge, holds onto his #1 rank handily.
at 09:47 on May 17th, 2008
Well I may be Number #1, but sometimes my Cliff Clavin Exclusives only rank a Number #2, relegated to the Shitter!! ahahahaha See what you made me do PEP, you made me say Cliff Clavin!!
at 16:41 on May 17th, 2008
Barry, Maybe you number 1 in the number 2 business.
at 17:25 on May 17th, 2008
You know Politisite, I wish I had said that !!!!!! hahahaha

Hi
everyone,
I am thankful for this discussion on the ranking system, I have also placed my
thoughts here of what I think of Nowpublic as a whole.
1st
- The ranking system (?) I do question some of it. I realize it is meant to be
fun and give everyone the insight to push for the goal or goals of being better
and faster at getting stories out to the world & for others to see and
read. While this is great, it also has a draw back for everyone that has not
the ability or time on a regular basis, to keep his or her score up or increase
it.
I feel this may discourage some from
presenting stories that maybe very important to others (locally, regional, nationally
& to the world as a whole) because they feel the story will not be seen
under just a story, but more so under a grading system that has
no relevance to the presentation of news or stories at all.
At first when I saw the ranking system this last week, I was like wow now I am
in school again getting graded for the stories I present here & felt
automatically turned off by it (being truthful is all).
Then upon further thoughts I
realized I had always been graded here, just not on a scale that is
openly visible for all to see at a quick glance. I do not know
if this ranking system should be openly visible to all at first glace of this
site for this very reason. I know others may feel this way also. What if it is
still in place but only used for everyone personal profile page with a link to
the tool room or forum(s) for a better understanding, if someone is interested
and feels the need to go for the goal of a better ranking on their own, while
still allowing everyone (new and veterans here) the ability to continue with
the real meaning behind this site original purpose – to allow the average
person the means of getting news to others that may not be known, but of
interests to everyone or even one individual for that fact.
2nd - I truly love Nowpublic for
the opportunity that it always the average person to present news,
stories & interests that is important to these individuals - not only
within there community, but to the whole in the world.
3rd -
This site allows others within the Nowpublic community the ability to get to
know one another on a more personal level then just a person who post a story
or comment on other sites via the internet else where in a open forum regarding
news media. I have not had anyone here that has been thoughtless in remarks,
comments or personal feedback. Everyone is supportive & encouraging of
others and always willing to help one another with their story in so many ways.
I believe this is because we all want the same results at heart, while keeping
it true, accurate & within the original ideal of keeping the public
informed to present news that needs to be told with out b.s. That other
news outlet(s) have done within our times.
In
closing in all my wildest dreams of what I wanted to be in my life an
independent Journalist was not one of them. This is what I consider everyone
here, whether you may have gone to school or not dose not matter to me. What is
important is that we have a voice in the news of this time and place in history
of our world. It may be for some of us here, a one-time presentation and for
others a continual need to present it on a regular basis. For that I am
thankful to everyone here as well as getting the news others need and want to know.
Sincerely, Everchanging

Issues with the grading system, as Everchanging pointed out that a small local story will never get to the front page, so the system is poorly weighted from the start.
Now, how could I be assured of getting a good score - simply by being in the NP office or writing stories on Vancouver or posting during NP office hours...been there said that got kicked off for saying and was reinstated - but facts are facts. The whole system is skewed pro NP office.
Maybe the points should be awarded for original stories only - not just the wank reposting of existing info. If I want to read about cyclones or earthquakes, I can go to one of dozens of top flight mainstream media outlets.
So identifying those who post ORIGINAL and NEW information should be important. An on-the-ground eyewitness account, or God-forbid, breaking a story (through the individual's own investigative work).
Otherwise the whole process is just a matter of ego stroking with no real value at all.
