As you've noticed we are incrementally redesigning certain aspects of the site. We want to know what you think. Both the good and the bad. Here's the place to tell us what you like and what you don't like. But please, keep it constructive.

I just want to be the first to post. No really here are a couple. These are only ideas for brainstorming.

one thing I notice is for "the stories that need you", there are older stories there frm a few days ago that may already be"old news" I am not sure what triggers a story to be placed there, but for instance, the cyclone story need images, so it maybe should be there. Maybe a button clicked would place it here, and be able to uncheck it when the story does not need any more help.?

Similar to this, I noticed that comments, especially at night it seems, are slower to be updated. Last night it showed the same comments for a few hours. One of them was a one liner spam link post. Maybe this is on purpose for saving server load?

And my last idea for today is to have a specific place that is anonomys to report spam. There is a lot of discussion about what constitutes something as spam which is fine, that is what the forums are for.

Insteaad this would be one place to submit, where other users do not know who it is so there is no reaction/retaliation and so that you guys can make the final decision without being influenced as well. Mostly for post like this "deals on widgets, click here" etc.

Maybe a 'submit possible spam' link in the footer.

That's all I have, Thanks

Hi comoms, good discussion.

As for spam concerns, there's really no need for anonymous reporting. NP has a "no flaming" policy and, unlike other sites, personal attacks, etc. aren't tolerated. No fear here!

If you see something that you believe is spam, you have a few options. You can leave a comment with your concern; tell the poster.  You can email a staff member (AKA "Super Editor"). They have the orange crowns. You can email a Guest Editor. We have the blue crowns. Or mix and match the options!    ;}

If you have concerns about a post, speak up. We like being transparent here; it's part of the process.

And, about how long things roll on--I've noticed that, too. The same things on the marquee keep going round and round. Kinda like the never-ending hot dogs on the carousel at the highway stores! But staff tells us that the devs are working on ways to speed things up in general.

As for the "news wanted" flag, good reminder. The person who places a flag like that has the responsibility for checking up on their flags, whether it be a wrench, or a "news wanted." Sometimes we may let a flag stay if there's a possibility that further photos, video, or information may yet be forthcoming. If you have concerns about that, feel free to email the person who placed the flag to remind them.

Thanks for the discussion and for sharing your concerns. I think you'll find that at NP, discussions may be passionate, but we (thankfully) have built a "culture" (as well as firm standards and guidelines) that elevates things above the retaliations or personal attacks you may find in other places on the web. Editors here actually do review material and comments, and are always available via on-site email.

I hope you enjoy NP. Everyone's input is part of the building process.

comoms,

you raise some important points - PEP has provided some great background to most issues so I won't  ramble on.

Regarding your point about the old stories in the 'news wanted' block you are correct there should be an expiry date just like there is for the front page. I'm going to make that suggestion to our designer right now.

in terms of confidentially reporting spam feel free to email one of the Staffers we're happy to handle it.

Is there any way to know if the people are online or if someone is online to ask a question? Just wondering thanks

0
ryan

other than noticing recent actions there is no indicator as to whether or not someone is online.

Thanks Ryan. It is only for helping out with the hacker type spam stuff.

In comparing NowPublic with NewsVine in terms of usability (as I alluded to on the conference call), NewsVine wins hands down.

The only thing it really lacks is a count of the number of times a story has been read.

If NowPublic does not make radical changes in the interface design ad server performance, it will be left in the dust.

I personally don't like newsvine interface as much and know several people who feel the same. There is more of a community feel here. This is only my opinion from an outsider looking in and as a community member.

You can always improve the look and the feel and ad buttons and whistles, but the members, the staff and the way it is run are what really makes this site worth something.

I do have to agree with you about the sense of community here. It does seem much more personable. But I will touch on community building aspects later.

If they could get the performance and UI pieces straight, the community aspect would push nowPublic past NewsVine. I have limited bandwidth to post content and the design of NowPublic forces my original content to get lost in the noise of all the "highlighted" content. Couple this with how long it takes me to publish a story here vs NewsVine, it can be very frustrating. For example, take a look at this piece I put on NewsVine yesterday:

For Former NFL Quarterback, College Football Is About Passion

The key differentiators are that:

1. It took me less than half the time to write and publish the story there as it would have here, with less formatting hassles;

2. I could include the images I wanted, with captions, as part of the story, not as thumbnails I would then have to click on to see. I did not have to muck with HTML code to do it;

3. I could save the story as an unpublished draft until I was ready to post. In the case of the story linked above, I had the content written but did not want it published until I had received the photograph from the Atlanta Falcons.

It all comes down to ease of use and functionality.

Even worse for me is when content I have written has disappeared off of my profile here, and the only way to find it is to do a search of words I might remember are in the article. Not a good thing.

I am not saying NewsVine does not have its warts. I have had pictures, keywords, and category selection disappear from the story hours after publication and I would have to resave the document to get them back in.

Back to the community building aspects.

1. Here, I have no interface to send out invites to people to join this community. On NewsVine, there is a tool to do it. Unfortunately, you have to manually input addresses and you cannot format or edit the email that goes out.

2. If I want to track threads I have commented on here, I have to click to my profile, and then click "track". On NewsVine I have a nice Web 2.0 interface that gets me the information without having to leave a page.

3. NewsVine allows people to build communities of interest through groups. This is very powerful and should not be underestimated.

Again, it all comes down to ease of use and functionality.

I could go on more, but I think this is a good place to start.

Wow. Great Points. You have obviously thought this out.  Some great ideas in there.

I have to agree with Christopher. It all comes down to use and functionality--also customization. And, as  Web 2.0 technologies are converging, it is important that Now Public, try to include those "bells and whistles" that everybody else provides.

Your business model is unique and the sense of community is strong; however, without keeping up-to-date on the latest user friendly features, and including those things that people like and want on your site, you do run the risk of being abandoned.

Although, there are many suggestions I could make along with Christopher's, I think everybody knows what's out there, to a certain degree, so I shall abstain. However, I do think you should add a spell checker.

Lastly, since Christopher is using one of your competitor's as an example, it should be examined very closely by your corporate staff, IMO.

Thanks for your comments. There's nothing there I disagree with... and we're working on a lot of that currently. Our first priority was site speed and search speed. We've made huge speed gains recently and we have an ongoing performance project working in the background. The recent formatting changes helped a lot (more than just window dressing). We are currently working on all the community building aspects you mentioned (and some you didn't) that will also be part of the new member pages. In the next two months we'll be making to the member pages and the story pages.

I'm not sure if this answers #2 in community building above but you should be able to track stories from the actual story pages with the track
function.

Thanks to all of you for your continued comments - you should know that we value all contributions - and we're listening.

Regards

Marc

Huge speed gains recently? Not that I have noticed...

And the track function requires too many hits and too much data to scroll through...

Good to hear all of the ideas and progress.

Thanks for all the great feedback.

We are working aggressively on server performance and site speed. Our goal is to have all our pages loading in <2 seconds by early Jan. 08. We've just gotten started and are already seeing some big gains on key pages. For example, on avg, the story detail page is 2x faster this week then last week.

Do you guys notice any difference lately - does the site feel faster overall?

The site will continue to get faster in the coming weeks. Keep your feedback coming. Thanks, Michael

Getting back to issues of UI and readability, I would like you to look at the following two links, which are the exact same story published on NewsVine and NowPublic. Look at it in terms of load time, readability, and access to the story photographs.

NowPublic

NewsVine

Although I agree that UI is important, I think we all have components that we have concerns about.

I'm sure that the devs will continue to improve UI. But what *really* has me concerned: contributors who publish material as though it were their original writing when it's not theirs at all. I have tracked some examples and have them  saved.

When the original source (or, in some cases, sources) are put beside the material presented by the author as their original work, it's very easy to see the outright copying and pasting of someone else's work.

This ethics question is, I think, something that can sink NP if it isn't dealt with.

Hi Christopher, as it turns out, the issue of original material vs. cribbed material is indeed current:

What are your thoughts on this?

I did this test. Looks like the Nowpublic page is only about .04 seconds slower which I am sure the further tweaks will help.

But it is a holiday evening. I'll check it again on saturday just for fun.

I like your ideas on the other stuff too. CBurns Sounds like their will be soom cool changes coming soon.

You don't have to highlight the whole story, and you should include the actual writer in what you do highlight. also including the date originally posted to the original site would also be helpful.

It's what I've been trying to do with stories I've been posting on NowPublic, with an intro and other added info from me.

Can you do that? How would you get to be one of the editors that get paid?

And can you get NowPublic program to NOT Crash Safari?

René

How do you get the flag widget to indicate bad: the wrench?

0
ifindtrends

Hi Rene,

You will need to be an Editor to use this tool.

Editors and Super Editors have other cool tools not just the Good Stuff. But Editor status have to be earned for these. For more details see the Member Guide.

So, what is 'Wrangler' then?

Hi Rene,

Here are the explinations of the different member abilities.

We'd hoped that you'll like it. And it should be faster and more convinient too. And maybe somewhat cleaner to eyes. Thanks for the comment.

NowPublic look is becoming blah. It is getting uglier, not better.

a Drupal theme? setup, layout, too much gray, or grey.

Still takes too long to get comments, or edits done. Hard to do a lot on NowPublic when it takes so long.

Safari still crashes. Firefox very slow in its own right, and is balky as a mule.

The new look is much, much cleaner, more streamlined.  :)
