Many members including myself have noticed a massive drop in hits on posts, I have my own views on what has caused this and think it is a combination of many things. Perhaps the staff can let us know from the site stats whether the drop in visitors affects different regions, for example are we getting fewer hits from the US or is the drop the same for all regions.

Thanks for posting this. I wish I could answer the question for you, but I know I am not the best person to do so.

I will bring it to the attention of the other staff tomorrow morning.

Thanks

perhaps there is simply a preoccupation/obsession with financial markets and attentions have shifted away from

Looks like NP has gone into a melt down!

Alexa gives segmented results based only on web users with installed alexa toolbars.  Please see my response to Laughing - Samurai a few posts down for details.

we are fed up of this palin and obama and McCain, 9 out of 10 post talks about useless debate.

every body enters the room very enthusiastically but in to three days, nothing new.

Does NowPublic belong to India? all the posts in number one position are from India?

Any web page does not belong to anywhere, no address no destination, no image building no myth, just truth.

Our internal page views are healthy, but we did encounter an issue with the way page views were displaying on the site. That seems to be fixed now and should be working normally.

However, our page views are more widely distributed now than they were before, so views on individual stories can seem low at times, however I can assure you that our actual traffic itself is up.

We monitor our page views internally and the page views have risen quite a bit this week. Overall traffic has not dropped.

I hope this provides at least a bit of clarity.

Visited NP today, what's happened to the number of "post reads?" they have hit rock bottom, posts with 10 reads over a 8-hour period? I checked out NP traffic which is at the lowest for the year?

I can't agree with what Amy posted, its just not true, but you would expect NP to try and cover up the deterioration of the lack of quality posts and the number of reads?

Amy's comments are totally accurate.  There was a display issue.  Please tell how you "checked out NP traffic" as I can assure you it is NOT at the lowest point in the year.  Unless a service has scripts on our pages, which we must put on, it can only make guesstimates about traffic based on external browser add ons.  Services like alexa and compete can not accurately monitor the traffic to a site because they use external measures; such as browsing history on their search bars, or combining click throughs on search pages.  These things give very segmented information about the the traffic.  For example, alexa measures its traffic by archiving and sorting the browser history of people who have installed an "alexa toolbar." If you do not have an alexa toolbar on your broswer alexa does not count you.

Alexa computes traffic rankings by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources. The information is sorted, sifted, anonymized, counted, and computed, until, finally, we get the traffic rankings shown in the Alexa service. The process is relatively complex, but if you have a need to know, please read on.

There were only 30 posts listed at the time of this visit? were are all the stories?

For someone who does not even have an NP account, you are well informed of how page views are comparing today to what they appeared to be a while ago. Why not make an account and actually have some of your own stories to reference?

I would formulate a response to your questions, but I don't do that to anon posters.

Amy, I deleted my account but that does not prevent me from visiting or making comments, even if they are anon. I was surprised to only find 30 listed posts at the time of my previous visit. Its not so anon because many know who I am and thank me via email.

Regards Zichi

It is always quiet on a Sunday morning, but I am sure it puts off genuine contributors when there are so many pastes on the site or as today Monday spam advertising live streaming on the front page.

You helped drive people away. along with the others in your pack. Noticed many who have expressed disgust with the direction NP was going.

Perhaps it is because it is hunting season and our readers for a large part are sportsmen. I have been away on and off for two weeks Bowhunting for Elk in the interior. But then perhaps in the fall, work  and family pressures, elections, economy and other distractions may contribute to it.  Of course some may just go to the National papers and read it, circumventing Now Public., I mean, we do it, that is how we get our stories.  THe only difference is we post another medias content into Now Public, others do not.

The majority of comments we get to our stories anyways comes from people we know on here for the most part, and that is a small circle of readers.  Some of us have 20,000 hits, but only 12 comments.

Some New People who read and want to comment on Now Public. may just not want to fill out the membership part if they want to join or comments. Just lazy I guess.

I used to spend an hour a day reading the Papers online and another hour reading Now Public stories and commenting on them. But sometimes when I try to comment, flag someones story it hangs up in limbo, or will not let my flag or comment through, after a failed second time, I give up and move on to the next NP story.   Even going from NP story to another takes a while with backspacing or hitting the home icon and scrolling through all the stories again until I go to the next NP story, so it takes too long for me, I have to refresh my page at times, not always  but when NP has a busy traffic it seems to happen more. Maybe it is just me.

On another note, speaking for myself, I would love to post more stories, it is that with the current Now Public software it can take twenty  minutes from start to finish to post one  story, where as before I could do 4 story posts with an opinion in twenty minutes.

My Life is too short to fiddle around spending time typing my story on word and then cutting and pasting it into the NP body of the story, then adding the news link and the news story, and sometimes the NP software loses everything making me start again, so when a better more compatible software for Win 98 comes up, I only have time to post one or two stories a week.

(Alas, "software more compatible with Win 98" will not come up, as it is not developed for as an OS anymore... Windows has gone through something like 4 OS generations since then. Instead of copy/pasting, you could just type into the browser directly- that's what I do, and I copy the content to my clipboard before publishing in case of buggage)

Thanks everyone for your comments here.

Feedback about the site is always welcomed, even if it's negative; it's good to know what everyone is thinking! :)

We try hard to make NowPublic a community that others want to come back to and can build online relationships to discuss matters that are important to them. Although of course, as with any community, online or otherwise, there are bound to be some 'rough times' and disagreements, and if a member chooses to leave during that time, then that is their choice, although we would always prefer them to stay. We do however have a code of conduct that we expect all to abide by and if that is broken then there will be consequences; those are our rules and everyone must abide by them.

We also so try to do our best to keep spam off the site, and we apologize if we miss some, however, if anyone sees any and it's outside of the hours of 8am to 7:30pm PST then send a message to Sanjay about it and he can delte it. If it's between the Vancouver hours (8am to 7:30pm) feel free to message me about it - that's no problem. We need our members to help us out.

I'm sorry Barry about the software problems you are encountering with the site - I hope they do not continue - we are working on making the site faster and easier to use, and working on page view load times. We are also developing a new story creation process as well that will help speed things along and categorize better.

We are always improving our technical side of the site, but we know that our members are what keep us going and keep the interest up. Without the great NowPublic community we wouldn't be able to do what we do, so don't think for a moment that your views and opinions aren't valuable, and while we try our best to accomodate everyone, we may not always get to do so, but anyone can contact me about anything anytime, even if you just want to vent... :)
