NP Rank:
After much to-ing and fro-ing, we have come up with some proposed language for our new flags. I'd very much appreciate it if you could have a look at this and comment.
Good Stuff
TITLE IN COMMENTS: Good Stuff
ROLL OVER TEXT: This is Good
Stuff.
Template:
<Membername>, You’ve
convinced me this you’ve done the work – it’s authentic. I also think that
you’ve been fair and thorough.
I didn’t get the
sense that you were hiding your biases, or passing off other’s work as your own.
Or worse – getting paid by those you cover – so it’s transparent and
independent.
I also think you
deserve praise for being an eyewitness, and for your investigative efforts. Good stuff.
Revoke Good Stuff:
TITLE IN COMMENTS Maybe not so good
Template:
<Membername>, this rarely happens, but even though I originally
flagged it as Good Stuff, I now have
some questions: Did you reveal all your
sources? I also wanted to confirm that you actually witnessed this event, or
that you added information that you researched on your
own.
This might be
problematic as part of the template.
Some people will just revoke it without adding anything so the copy
should be able to stand on its own.
Perhaps we can have some logic in place that requires a change be made or
puts something generic like ‘no comment added’ if nothing was
changed.
News Wanted
(This requires more thought)
TITLE IN COMMENTS Someone should take this story
on
Template: I think this
is an important story and would benefit
from other NowPublic contributors working on it. I’ve flagged it as News Wanted and
invite others in relevant locations to look for more
evidence.
This is the ODR
prototype so we should put some thought into branding here.
Breaking News
Text: This is urgent.
Template:
Thanks <membername> for
getting this story out so quickly. It will now show up on the home page for 4
hours. If new developments justify it, I’ll renew this flag for another cycle.
Revoke:
Text: Revoke Breaking.
Template
Hey, <membername>, thanks for getting this up so quickly…I’m removing
the urgent flag for this story for the time being. If there are any new
developments, please let me know.
Needs Improvement
TITLE IN COMMENTS: This is good but...
Template: <Membername> I think your story has
potential but needs some improvement.
I’ve got a few suggestions, and if you give them a try I’d be happy to
remove this flag.
I wasn’t sure
what was newsworthy in this story. News should always be about posting current stuff – new things you’ve
discovered. Please review What Makes News
News.
It can really
help if you follow the old “W5” news formula –
making sure you have answered the questions, Who? What? Where? When? And
Why? (You might want to check out our
J-Tips for more help).
Revoke:
Text:
Much better.
Template: <Membername> thanks for improving your
story – I can see you’ve put more effort into it. I’ve removed the flag and now
more readers can see it. Thanks for your
contribution.
Fishy
TITLE IN COMMENTS:
Think there’s something not quite right about this story? Explain
why.
Template: Hey,
<Membername>. I found some things that didn’t pass my sniff test . Could
it be…fishy ??? You might want to
fix some stuff up or else it’s headed to
the bottom of our bird cage.
Want me to get
particular? OK, I got a whiff that this story may not actually true.
That image you
added: did you really take it yourself?
This story may
be a hoax, for all I know – or maybe you think you’re auditioning for a job at
The Onion.
Or maybe –
you’re gunning for our Catch of the Day award???
Revoke
TITLE IN COMMENTS:
Not fishy.
Template: <Membername> I used to think this story
was fishy but now – I’m not so sure anymore, for these
reasons.
It’s kinda grown
on me – seafood is my favorite sort of news.
You’ve
made some good changes. I get it
now.

I like how the "good stuff" flag now specifies more clearly that the article is getting marked for reasons beyond our simply liking the content, and it makes the criteria more rigorous. I also prefer "needs improvement" to "incomplete".

So do I.
