NP Rank:
UFO Crash Site Confirmed by U.S. National Laboratory Scientist Dr R. Ronald Rau ?
Update: This story turned out to be part of a hoax see a follow up here.
The site of an alledged UFO crash near Socorro, New Mexico was visited by an author and a researcher, the site has rocks only burnt on one side and trees burnt at the top. It is claimed that rock samples were sent to Brookhaven National Laboratory to be analized by Dr Rau, and is claimed he concluded the cause of the effects at the site were the results of a "UFO". So far it is claimed Dr Rau's reports have only been shown to a handful of people, please see the source for more information.

I work in the Media & Communications Office at Brookhaven Lab. Claims have been posted online that Dr. R. Ronald Rau at Brookhaven National Laboratory recently confirmed an alleged UFO crash site by analyzing rock samples from the area. These claims are false.
Dr. Rau retired from Brookhaven Lab in 1990 and now holds a guest appointment at the lab. He did not analyze rock samples, he has not written reports on rocks, and he had no knowledge of these claims until contacted on October 8, 2008, by a reporter.
When Dr. Rau was a working scientist, he did experiments using particle accelerators. As an administrator, he held various appointments in senior management at Brookhaven Lab.
The rock analysis reports attributed to Dr. Rau appear to be poorly made forgeries that are only distinguished by the use of the Brookhaven Lab and U.S. Department of Energy logos, which are readily available online. They are not in the format of an official Brookhaven Lab report and have multiple grammatical and spelling errors.

Vinny, I like this story. It's good stuff. I see the truth is slowly starting to come to light. Glad this matter is still an on going investigation in the UFO community. Per the article (in the Canadian) those trace amounts of the U-238 isotope is definate proof that SOMETHING was there. We have to remember that the atomic age was barely in it's infancy during the Roswell Incident. So where and why would that isotope show up there? Keep us posted on this one Vinny

This is pure unadulterated bullshit people. From Brookhaven's own website THERE IS NO R. Ronald Rau that works at Brookhaven. Just these listings:
Brookhaven National Laboratory
Upton, NY 11973-5000
You want to know something? When people don't check out the sources it actually discredits those of us who do believe!

The disinformation campaign has been highly successful. The truth is in there, but see if anybody can pick the gems out of the pile of gravel.

I have done some digging on this, and have found several mentions of a Dr R. Ronald Rau being at Brookhaven from different sources, one I found says he is retired. The article in the Canadian says the rocks were sent to his lab in 2008 the source below from 2007 says he's retired, this does raise some questions about the report from the Canadian.

"1. In ref. to report CNM-080108RAU the reports basically is saying that there are small traces of radioactivity. The radioactivity traces was a measurable amount 238 U [which is the most common isotope of uranium found in nature] but is very surprising that it would be on these samples. The other micro-trace picked up was 214Pb [lead] and 214Bi [bismuth] which has very short half-lives but to my account this can be viewed as neglible. What is interesting is 238 U on the rock samples. This can be caused by a condition called Locard's Exchange Principle. This also can be explained in my second report [CNM-080109RAU] as the same phenomena."
I very highly doubt that a Phd working in a government lab is going to use grammer like this. Hopefully the person who put this together was paraphrasing what he said, if not I would question its validity. Also this report being referenced, CNM-080108RAU, where is the report filed? Is it filed at Brookhaven? Mr. Rau's personal files? Does Mr. Rau have a website where we can view this report in its entirety?

Hey,
I am in Socorro attending NMT. I have been to the crash site and collected some samples. It is as described. Pretty awesome, especially since there is black material underneath the white blue quartz stuff.
at 09:52 on October 11th, 2008
Thanks Tommy have you got any photos of the samples, if you have you could join NP and add them to this post.
PS: You can of cause join without any photos!

I have a picture of the cliff wall. I can take some pics of the samples with my phone but they might not be the best. I will be adding some pics to my website http://www.geocities.com/jag10222000/mineral.html .
