The US government is to loan troubled automakers General Motors and Chrysler $17.4bn to help them survive. It will use part of the $700bn originally earmarked to rescue US banks.
The firms have a deadline of March 31st 2009 by which to become viable. Ford, the other member of the "Big 3", has said it will get by without government money. President George W Bush said allowing the US car industry to fail would not be "a responsible course of action"
