ACORN has developed a new site to fight,  what it calls, smears.  They pointed to Fox news as an outlet who is perpetrating false information about the Group.  ACORN says that most of what is being reported on Television comes from ACORNs own quality assurance programs, that picks up registrations that appear to be problematic and let the board of elections know the potential problems.  They related to reporters at a press conference that they are required by law to turn overs all registrations, even potential fraudulent ones, to the Board of elections.  ACORN wants the country to have a resource where one can go to understand the process and attack the false allegations by outlets like Fox News who in a 48 hour period mentioned their group over 300 times.  See Fight the Smears

From Friday, Oct. 10 through Monday, Oct. 13, Fox News Channel mentioned ACORN an astounding 342 times.  This is by far the most attention ACORN has ever gotten from Fox, or any news outlet for that matter, and it has been unrelentingly negative, full of smears and accusations of ACORN's involvement in everything from destroying the world's economy to undermining elections here at home.  And on Oct. 15th, during the last Presidential debate, Senator McCain claimed that "ACORN is now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy.".  Wow!

Needless to say, none of it is true. Far from it. As you know, ACORN has been at the forefront of the fight to end the kind of financial practices, called "predatory lending," that contributed to the world financial crisis. ACORN has also just completed a record-setting voter registration drive that helped 1.3 million low-income people, people of color, and young people register to vote.

In fact, that's why these attacks keep coming.  Conservatives in the Republican Party and the John McCain Campaign and their allies in the right-wing bamboozlement chorus are desperately afraid that the new voters ACORN has brought into the system will hold them accountable for their economic failures.

We know they won't stop.

But neither will we.

We've launched a fight-back center as part of our flagship website, ACORN.org, called The Real ACORN.  The purpose of The Real ACORN is to showcase ACORN's historic voter registration effort as well as its consistent presence as a voice for working families for 38 years.  Designed to highlight the efforts of ACORN members, leaders and staff to fight for the issues that matter most to families working hard to make ends meet, the section's centerpiece is entitled "The Truth About ACORN" to set the record straight on such topics as voter registration, "voter fraud," the financial crisis, federal funding and Sen. Barack Obama.

The Real ACORN also gives ACORN members, friends, and allies an opportunity to fight back against the smears through the fight back center called "Don't Let The Right-Wing Noise Machine Get Away With It."

"With so many smears and lies being spread on mainstream and internet media about ACORN, we thought it was necessary to give the facts," said ACORN National President Maude Hurd.  "ACORN members are proud of the fact that we helped register 1.3 million new voters, the largest voter registration drive in history.  Because of our success, we are now the target of those threatened by the empowerment of low-income and moderate-income Americans."

Topics in "The Truth About ACORN" section include:

"ACORN is dedicated to making everyone's voice count in the vital public policy debates in our country," Hurd said.  "Helping citizens become active voters is a crucial part of our work to help build a fairer and more inclusive democracy.  We will continue this important work by encouraging every eligible voter to go the polls this November."

ACORN is the nation's largest community organization of low- and moderate-income families, with over 400,000 member families organized into 850 neighborhood chapters in 110 cities across the country.  Since 1970, ACORN has taken action and won victories on issues of concern to our members, including better housing for first-time homebuyers and tenants, living wages for low-wage workers, more investment in our communities from banks and governments, and better public schools.

Thanks Jordan.  I see the Supreme Court handed down a decision that is positive for democrats on this issue.  I need to go and look at the decision and the decent opinion.  I think the court is pretty fair as it is split.  If NP writers haven't done anything on the Ohio Sec of state decision, I will work on something.

I agree with you.  But they do have one point.  If their workers are faking registrations, they have to, by law, turn them into the election boards for the county they are working in.  So if they turn in a bad registration, with an explanation that says the registration is probably invalid, they get slammed by the Right.  So it is important to find out if they are just hiring poor employees or if they are really attempting to cause disruption to the system so they can come back after the election and cry foul.  I do know that McCain has about 5,000 lawyers, while Obama has nearly 9,000 lawyers in place for disputes.

Some kind of voter registration fraud has taken place here in Louisiana. a group called Voting is Power, financed by the national Democratic party, was active since Feb.

A Democrat-affiliated group that led a voter registration drive earlier this year is still under investigation by state elections officials as the Nov. 4 election approaches.

Potential problems surfaced when registrars discovered cards were being submitted for people already on the voter rolls. Others contained incomplete information and yet others contained “blatantly false” information. (including cats, dogs and dead people)

Secretary of State Jay Dardenne recalled two cards received by the Caddo Parish registrar of voters with George W. Bush as the voter applicant and a 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. address in Shreveport. In Jefferson Parish, a card was filed for Registrar of Voters Dennis DiMarco.

Denials that they were associated with the Dems was posted in Reuters. But the Times-Picayune was quite explicit in their story about the group: Demos Launch Massive Voter Drive.

While Voting Is Power has sent in batches of applications for months, registrars have begun to see a disturbing pattern of misinformation on the forms, including duplicates, cards filled out with different colors of ink, or using the names of pets or dead people. In Jefferson, DiMarco sensed something amiss when a new registration card recently crossed his desk.

The card, partially filled out, had his name and listed his office's post office box on Citrus Boulevard as the address. It also listed him as a male, a Democrat and African-American.

"And I can tell you I'm only one of those," said DiMarco, who is white and Republican. There was one bright spot, though. "They flattered me by making me younger -- I did appreciate that."

Curiously the name of the group has interesting connections. Do google: 'Voting is Power'.

one Democratic organization has culled the names of as many as 50,000 people in four major parishes -- including Jefferson and Orleans -- to be added to Louisiana's voter rolls.

The group, called Voting Is Power and financed by the national Democratic Party, has been canvassing neighborhoods since February, collecting personal information and signatures from as many new potential voters as possible, said Brian Welsh, a spokesman for Louisiana Victory, the umbrella group coordinating local and national Democratic voter drives. Voting Is Power members also have targeted East Baton Rouge and Caddo parishes.

ACORN does have its headquarters in New Orleans, but has not been overtly active in voter drives here.
