Fire at Dubai's luxury Atlantis hotel by craigwright76

Dubai's most extravagant hotel to date has been damaged by a fire.

It broke out in the lobby of the Atlantis hotel early this morning. No one was hurt and there were no guests staying there, but all the workers had to be evacuated.

In a statement the hotel owners told Times Online: "There was limited damage to the external roof and lobby dome this morning as a result of a contained fire at Atlantis, Palm Jumeirah resort."

They added: "Atlantis will open on time on 24 September 2008".

The hotel will be the first to open on The Palm, a man-made island off the coast of the UAE that is shaped like a palm tree. It was touted as one of the emirate's most extravagant hotels to date, featuring a water park, aquarium, 1,500 guest rooms and 16 restaurants.

Setting off for work this morning I was greeted by the noise of fire engine sirens. I decided to see what was going on, followed further up the Palm and saw the newly built and soon to open Atlantis Hotel going up in flames. Luckily I had my old camera with me and managed to use the confusion of the moment to get a few quick shots. I've been in Dubai for exactly 9 months today - In that time i've seen 3 major fires. What's going on - Does health and safety not exist here? I put it down to the massive amounts of unskilled migrant labour here.

Forgot to mention... I heard Kylie Minogue was supposed to be performing at the opening of the Atlantis Hotel later this month.

It's so sad to see that, How come in that huge project they don't care about safety and fire system. I'm agree with you, here is a massive amount unskilled labours here, because skilled labours are more money to pay. I saw recently video about Burj Dubai construction The General Construction Manager says while interviewed that it took 5 month to teach how to built simple staight wall to the unskilled labour. It's shame such an expensive projects have been built by unskilled workers who's never seen even basic education.
