Jailers at Galveston County jail have received toiletries kits to help them through the amenities starved crisis in the area, including cans of soft drinks.

GALVESTON — More than 60 daytime and some 40 overnight jailers are keeping the county jail on Galveston Island operating, assisted by regular deliveries of much-needed essentials by companion public service officials.

There were more than 1,100 inmates at the jail Tuesday, with room for about 150 more, as officers at the facility received 60 toiletries kits shipped in by Texas City police officers who had been given them by Christ Church Fellowship's state Highway 146 congregation.

Along with the toiletries, the jailers received cases of soft drinks, wipes and other "luxuries" to help ease their workload on the amenities-starved island.

The sheriff of Galveston County should be forced to resign for keeping the jail open.  What kind of "Christian" church would provide gift packages for jailers but nothing for prisoners?  It's a Christian duty to care for prisoners, not their jailers
