Jindal declares State of Emergency for Louisiana and Hurricane Ike.

Despite electricity going off in parts of the area, New Orleans is finally catching its breath.

Southwest Louisiana is not, however, being on the right side of the storm landing near Galveston.

More info on Hurricane Ike's effects on Louisiana on DrMarty's NP story.

There are some mandatory evacuation orders already in place. Grand Isle, Plaquemines Parish, and more to come.

New Orleans is still wary.

Everyone along the Louisiana coast has been urged to evacuate, from Port Fouchon (down on the 'Toe') west. Storm surge already hitting our coastlines.

Hey, Houston, evacuees come on over to New Orleans. Lots of hotel rooms available.

Gov. Bobby Jindal has declared a state of emergency in preparation for the possible landfall Hurricane Ike. Ike headed for Cuba tonight, with a track predicting entry into the Gulf of Mexico later this week.

For some awesome photos, pre-gustav, during and after the storm see this archive. there's some of the topping of the Industrial Canal and the flooding of the area near it that terrified us just before the cable, then the electric went out.

René, I like this story. It's good stuff. I am so glad we don't have hurricanes where I live. I am always glued to any info when these are going on down south. We visited many places in the gulf coast.

Lots of hotel rooms available in New Orleans for those evacuating from Texas. Get out of the projected storm path. You can google for New Orleans hotel reservations. There are some deals.
