NP Rank:
London's Tower Bridge to get facelift
One of London's most famous landmarks is getting a facelift - an $8 million facelift over the next four years.
Personally I like it just the way it is.
The British landmark will be stripped of its paint and repainted in traditional blue and white as part of plans announced Monday.
Work on the improvements are due to start in June or July, with the bridge remaining open until at least the winter of 2010.
The work will be funded by The City Bridge Trust charity.
The bridge beside Tower Hill has become one of London's most recognizable sites since the future king Edward VII opened it in 1894.
It is the only raising bridge in London and its middle sections are opened 1,000 times a year to allow ships to pass down the River Thames.

I spotted this statue of the Girl & Dolphin by Tower Bridge whilst I was spending the day photographing famous landmarks along both banks of the Thames one day during autumn of 2007.

The view was magnificient , retouching a monument that is any way beautiful would make it as common as a buildings now.

We also went to the Tower Bridge experience - it takes you out over the Thames on the bridge catwalk, and shows you the old inner workings of the steam-powered lifting mechanism used for many years, now replaced by electronics.
