DERBY, N.Y. (WIVB) - From pumpkins to cold hard cash, a brother and sister business is truly paying off, and helping some four-legged friends in need.

It's an empty field right now, but this plot of land produced hundreds of pumpkins, pumpkins that are now being sold by a brother and sister entrepreneurial team.

Sarah Schneider from Derby said, "We plant them in beginning of June and let them grow all summer long. And at the beginning September and end we start to go over there and start picking them."

They sell them not only in front of their house, but at the local hardware store down the road from them in the south towns, it's becoming quite a profitable venture.

"We have about almost $900 but we're trying to get to $1,000 that's our goal," said Sarah.

The goal isn't to make money for themselves. Shawn and Sarah are animal lovers. All the money raised from their pumpkin patch is going to the SPCA.

Actually, they are keeping around 25% of it for their hard work, at a time when donations could soon be down. The SPCA welcomes the kindness of the Schneiders. The shelter is bracing for tough times, like many not for profits.

Gina Browning from Erie County SPCA said, "It would be irresponsible of us to not have a plan in place in case we do start seeing a decrease in donations, and we do start seeing animals surrendered to us because people can no longer afford them."

The money will go into the SPCA's general fund for the year.

Shawn Schneider said, "It was really no money to plant the pumpkins, except to buy the stuff to kill the grass and keep the bugs away."

It's not the first time that they've donated to a worthy cause. It all started just three years ago.

"My dad saved seeds from when we bought pumpkins, and he said we should plant them and the first year we donated it to the Lions Club said Shawn.

Now the only thing left is to figure out where they'll donate the money next year.
