Yuki Bhambri sizzles as India defeats Mexico in Junior Davis Cup

Bhambri beat Feranado Larrea from Mexico 7-5,6-1 in the D match of the Junior Davis Cup World finals, then won again partnering with Saurabh Singh.

NEW DELHI: Yuki Bhambri won both his singles and doubles matches as India scored a 2-1 victory over host Mexico in a Pool ‘D’ league match of the junior Davis Cup World Group under-16 tennis at San Luis Potosi on Monday.

“Yuki was broken in the first game, but he broke back.

“He was down 1-4, but adjusted well to the court conditions and produced good backhands and serves to take the set 7-5.

“He was in total command in the second set,” the team captain, Kawaljeet Singh, said.

Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas is an international team event for boys aged 16 and under. 

The finals will be played between 16 nations in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, from Tuesday 23 to Sunday 28 September.

Countries participating in the final are as follows. Seeded nations: 1. Russia, 2. India, 3. USA, 4. Hungary, 5. Argentina, 6. Sweden, 7. Australia, 8. Great Britain. Unseeded nations: Tunisia, Peru, Japan, Egypt, Chinese Taipei, Latvia, Brazil, Mexico.

U.S.A is also doing great!


American teams took a step closer to their collective goal on day one in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Sloane Stephens and Kristie Ahn sealed the vital two points to seal victory for USA girls in their opening round robin tie against Columbia. Stephens got the team off to a flying start by beating Yuliana Lizarazo 6-3, 7-5 before Ahn took the winning point with a rampant 6-0, 6-2 win over Alexandra Morena.

The USA boys were irresistible against Latvia in their opening Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas tie, taking all three points with wins for Evan King, Denis Kudla and the doubles combination of King and Raymond Sarmiento. King beat Mikelis Libietis 7-6, 6-3; Kudla defeated Arturs Kazijevs 6-4, 3-6 6-1 before King and Sarmiento beat Arvis Berkins and Libietis.
